I'm with the naysayers on this one. Just didn't find it interesting. Too much the smothering, medieval hero vs the I-don't-need-you-but-I-secretly-do heroine. Ugh. Outside of using vampires and werewolves, this wasn't anything different than a thousand other chick/lit stories.Tags : Real Vampires Have Curves (Glory St. Claire, Book 1) [Gerry Bartlett] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Real Vampires Have Curves Glory St Claire Book 1 Gerry Bartlett 9780425213773 Books Reviews
Read a few pages and stopped. Starts out with lots of babbling about being bloated and in a relationship with someone off and on. Not quite what I'm looking for. A little too dramatic and uneven. Story line lacks substance!
I came across this book here on and thought why not? I'm so glad I did. This book follows Glory a very old vamp who was turned while girls were still curvy, so she's stuck for all eternity like this. She's seen the times change where thin is in, and this just isn't her. Lucky for her she's around men that were turned back then too, and enjoy her full assets, one being her on/off boyfriend Jerry. This tale is about a vamp hunter, Westwood, who goes after Glory and the whole vampire community. It's well written showing how Glory isn't perfect and has insecurities just like any woman. Twists and turns happen, and it's very well written. You'll laugh out loud and enjoy learning what makes Glory tick.
I thought this one started out kind of slow. That's why it gets 4 instead of 5 stars. At first I didn't think I was even going to like it. But the farther into the book you go, the more you want to keep reading. It's really fun to watch Glory "live" and learn. She might be 400+ years old but she still has A LOT of learning to do. The story is great and I can't wait to start the next book to see what Glory, Blade, Flo and the rest get themselves involved in next!
Oh yeah! Also keep in mind that this book isn't for the young ones looking for a new Twilight. Keep looking because this one is for the adults.... for sure!
This book was chosen as a book to read for my book club and I'm sure glad it was!!!! It did have a bit of a slow start but readers please hang in there! It was an absolute page turner! I haven't read a vampire book in quite a while but this has renewed my interest. I'm now reading the next book in this great series! I love that Ms. Bartlett includes dogs in her books. I love dogs and books so put the 2 together and I'm happy!!! So much better than Sookie!!!! I LOVE GLORIANA ST. CLAIR!!! I bet you will too!
When I first started read this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it. The main vamp (pun intended), Glory, seemed to be all over the place and a little too vapid for me.
However, she grows on you. Quickly. She becomes a bit more "real" as you go on and start finding out she's a vampire with a complex about her thighs and is semi-bothered by the fact she let a stripper talk her into a spray-on tan. She also has a smart alec guard dog named "Valdez" (Valdez the 112th, she thinks, because she names all her dogs "Valdez") who talks like John Travolta from "Get Shorty". See what I mean? She grows on you.
I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting and am glad I have the next book on order. More than once I caught myself giggling out loud at something. The cast of character is not the usual vampire fare and Bartlett has changed around the vampire powers and blood drinking rules to suit her setting which I like. There's no angst and doomed tone at all which is rare in a vampire novel, and frankly, it was much appreciated.
My only complaint was that the reasonably bright Glory missed some patently obvious incidents I felt she would have seen right through so occasionally it seemed like she went from bright to just utterly clueless which bugged me.
Overall, a very entertaining little book and I'm looking forward to the next one. I will recommend it to friends who like the vamp romance/mystery novel as something to give a look.
I’ve had this book on my wish-list for years, and I finally purchased it. And I’m so glad I did. “Real Vampires Have Curves” was a quick-read that I read in about four hours, but it kept me entertained, and laughing the whole time.
The main-character, Glory St. Clair is a fashionable, full-figured vampire who’s moving to Austin to open up her own antique shop, “Vintage Vamp Emporium” with her talking dog, Valdez. Her on again, off again lover, Jerimiah Campbell aka Blade, is a hunky Scottish Vamp with an overprotective streak. He warns her that a vampire hunter is on the loose, and that she needs to be careful. The basic plot of the novel is her trying to find and defeat the vampire hunter. Not to spoil anything, but it has a few deaths, along with some laugh-out loud moments, and some quirky, interesting characters.
I fell in love with main character, Glory. I loved her voice, and dialogue in the book. It felt like I could hear her speaking in my head while I was reading, which was a good thing because the author really executed the character’s voice. Glory’s sassy, independent, and fun personality made her very likeable to me, but I could see how it could be annoying for some. She’s one of those characters or people that you either like them or you don’t. No real in-between.
Glory also had a couple of insecurities about her weight, and body at times, but I felt that it made her realistic. It made her feel like she was like every other women in the world. At times she annoyed me because she made stupid, naïve decisions, but she got better as the story progressed.
There is a slight love triangle in the book between Glory, Blade, and Damian, her roommate’s brother. But Damian comes off as sort of an arrogant arse so hopefully she chooses Blade. I really liked Blade, and I loved the way the author portrays him. Blade is hard, confident Alpha male with a slight Scottish accent at times. I do think he is too overprotective of Glory at times, but I’m hoping that changes as the series goes on.
As far as vampire books go, there wasn’t really any twists or anything really different. Her vampire characters basically stuck to traditional vampire ways. They don’t go into the sunlight and stakes to the heart can kill them, but she did add a few modern twists. Vampires can be photographed, but can’t look into mirrors. And they drink synthetic blood that they can buy online.
But overall, I really enjoyed the novel, and I think this series brings something new to the vampire genre. There aren’t many novels with a full-figured vampire, talking dog, hunky Scot, gorgeous Italian Vampires, and shapeshifters all in one book. If you love vampires, and chick-lit, definitely think about reading this!
I'm with the naysayers on this one. Just didn't find it interesting. Too much the smothering, medieval hero vs the I-don't-need-you-but-I-secretly-do heroine. Ugh. Outside of using vampires and werewolves, this wasn't anything different than a thousand other chick/lit stories.
