I read this book in one marathon session, not even stopping while I cooked. After months of anticipation, I was rewarded with an entertaining mystery and alternate world.I have been a fan of P.N. Elrod's vampire novels for many years. And, in this new novel and new world, she does an excellent job of putting together a believable alternate Victorian-era England, where magic or psychic arts are simply a fact of life. Her main characters are well developed, and show depth that I would like to explore in further adventures. Alexandra Pendlebury, the protagonist, is a woman who has been shaped by her talents and her family into a formidable person.
The story itself is fast paced, the answer to the mystery was not too obvious, but could be followed in retrospect. The one huge surprise near the end grabbed me by the heart though. I'm going to have to skip those pages the next time I read this book. And, I will be re-reading this one while I wait for the next installment.

LOVED this book! It's a steampunk Victorian urban fantasy mystery with terrific characters and a rip roaring pace. I love the idea of an alternative Victorian era in which Victoria herself marries a different consort and has become a strong feminist and diplomatic ruler. Our heroine, Alex, is one of the queen's many goddaughters and a member of Her Majesty's Psychic Service. Alex is both formidable and vulnerable as she finds herself in the middle of an increasingly complex and dangerous plot that threatens England, the Psychic Service, and Alex's own life. Besides lots of interesting twists, there's even a nice romantic thread to the story. I really look forward to the next book in this series.
What a great read! Set is an alternate Victorian-Era (slightly steampunk) London, the heroine is a free-spirited psychic detective. The novel is mainly a murder mystery but has a lot of character development, psychological drama, and a little romance. Elrod has created people who I would love to meet in real life - or flee from in terror.
I do not want to give away the plot, but I will say that it has several turns that are unexpected, yet in hindsight completely supported. This story grabs you at the beginning and never lets go. It has been ages since I stayed up late reading a book but I just could not put this one down.
I really hope that this is the beginning of a long series. There are so many stories to tell in this universe and Elrod is one fine writer.
It looks like P.N. Elrod's "The Hanged Man" is the first in her new "On Her Majesty's Psychic Service" series. I've got to admit that I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's a very well-written, somewhat hectic, decently characterized Steampunk/Murder/Mystery/Thriller of a book. There are a couple of instances where the logic is a bit thin and character behavior really isn't correct. But, they are few, far between, and forgivable. Though the titles of her other works don't sound promising to me, I'm still going to give them a try (since this one was so good). I'm rating it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5 (and would like to raise that a half star to 4-1/2 stars). Recommended.
Not exactly a Steampunk novel, more an alternative history, urban fantasy, supernatural themed mystery. Full of action and interesting characters, set in an alternative Victorian Great Britain, where Queen Victoria married an English nobleman instead of a German prince, and had a long, happy marriage instead of a long state of being a widow. Victoria in this history was a strong female character, who got women the right to vote in the 1840s, and established her empire through peaceful diplomacy, instead of letting her armies engage in empire building through military conquest. In addition, the Queen established a "Psychic Service", to deal with any threats to her realm from paranormal or supernatural sources. Miss Alex Pendelbury, the Queen's goddaughter, is one of these psychic investigators, who stumbles on a plot with both mundane and supernatural elements that endangers the Pax Brittania. She is aided by other members of Her Majesty's Psychic Service, including its director, Lord Richard, who will feel familiar to readers of P.N. Elrod's other series about THE KEEPER OF THE KING. It's a great crossover element from another fictional universe. There is plenty of action, and the plot is fast paced and involved. I believe this is the first book in what will be another series, and I look forward to seeing more of Miss Pendelbury and her cohort.
